Regular maintenance is essential to ensure reliable performance and extend the life of your diesel generator. Follow these key care guidelines:
Oil and Filter Changes: Check engine oil levels regularly using the dipstick when the generator is off and the oil has settled. Change the engine oil and oil filter every 250 to 500 hours of operation or as recommended by the manufacturer.
Coolant System: Inspect coolant levels after the engine has been shut down and cooled. Top up with the correct coolant mixture as needed. Check hoses, connections, and the radiator for leaks or blockages.
Fuel System: Use clean, quality diesel fuel. Drain water from fuel separators weekly. Replace fuel filters at recommended intervals to prevent clogging from dirt, water, or sediment. If the generator is not used frequently, use fuel stabiliser to prevent degradation.
Air Filter: Inspect and clean or replace the air filter regularly to ensure efficient combustion and prevent engine damage.
Battery: Check the battery voltage and terminal connections monthly. Clean terminals to prevent corrosion and ensure tight cable connections. Batteries may need replacement every 2 to 3 years.
General Inspections: Clean the exterior of the generator regularly to prevent dirt and debris from entering filters and vents. Inspect for oil, fuel, or coolant leaks around hoses, gaskets, and connections. Check all mounting hardware and electrical connections for tightness.
Exercising the Generator: If not in regular use, run the generator under load for at least 30 to 60 minutes every month to prevent fuel degradation, carbon buildup, and wet stacking.
Professional Service: Schedule annual professional servicing including load bank testing, compression checks, valve adjustments, and full electrical system inspection.
